I am so happy and excited to attend this class. After long patience due to financial problem and personal agenda, i finally able to register and back to my original plan to make the dream of my late father become true, become Ph.D holder. I know its a long way and many obstacles await but i belief Allah will help me to go through it.

Dr. Syamsuddin Arif

Posted by Abdul Halim Syihab on April 10, 2009

This wonderful scholar is my senior both in Gontor and Malaysia. His achievements encourage me to go further and further for my academic goal. He is an inspiration to all Indonesian academician specially those who concentrates in Islamic thought fields, the field that i am undergoing currently. I met him several of times and lastly was during the ceremonial congratulatory for the Ph.D degree conferment of Dr. Adian Husaini, one of INSIST scholar, last week.

Have a nice reading.

Saat Dr. Syamsuddin melun curkan bukunya, Orientalis dan Diabolisme Pemikiran (Jakarta: GIP,2008), seorang mantan teman dekatnya semasa kuliah Kuala Lumpur berujar, Saya tidak menyangka dia menjadi seperti ini. Dulu saya sempat khawatir, suatu ketika dia menjadi liberal. Ia belajar dan menghafal al-Qur’an kepada Petta Lanre Said. Saya sempat menghafal 30 juz, khatam tiga kali, ujarnya. Gelar doktor pemikiran Islam berhasil diraihnya juga di ISTAC (2004) dengan disertasi berjudul Ibn Sina Cosmology: A Study of the Appropriation of Greek Philosophical Ideas in 11th Century Islam di bawah bimbingan Profesor Paul Lettinck. Katanya pada Syamsuddin, After Fazlur Rahman there is no one in the Muslim world who has done an extensive study on Ibn Sina, you should be the one. One should be a good Muslim and a good scholar at the same time, ujarnya.

The Concept of Science (Series of lectures Philosophy Of Science subject)

Posted by Abdul Halim Syihab on March 24, 2009

The first week lecture was delivered by Dr. Noor Abdi Gudle of Somalia. He discussed the brief introduction of the course contents. He deliberated the meaning of Philosophy and its context to science. Some views of Muslim philosophers such as Al-Kindi, Al-Farabi and Ibn Sina was displayed to explore furthermore on the terms. The lecture is more like opening gate to the students before i start to teach since he taught this course for the last three years, thanks to his courtesy for that.

This week i started my lecture on the concept of science and the different between Islam and Modern Science in general. Science means Knowledge (derived from Latin word Scientia). Its an organized body of knowledge according to certain principles with defined subject matters.  The science development divided into two main pole; Islam and Modern. The term clearly distinguished the concepts. Islamic Science believes in the element of divine/revealed knowledge while the other, Modern Science, purely based on human logic and reason.

The Modern Science defined as empirical, theoritical and practical knowledge about natural world.  Modern Science follower believes that all evidence must be empirical, only things that can perceived by sense are real, revealed knowledge is not real knowledge. These concepts clearly pointed out the unnecessity of believing the things beyond physical exposure or metaphysic.

As a result, the weak judgement of human mind tends to be unstable and subject to numerous changes. Take for example the case of Nicolaus Copernicus (1543). In the beginning, he developed a theory that earth is the centre of universe and all the stars including sun and planets are running around it. The objections arose from astronomers of that time regarding the appearance of Mercury and Venus which contradict with the theory. With the help of Ptoleamic system of astronomy developed by Claudius Ptolemy, Copernicus soon revised the theory and said that now sun is the centre of universe. Again he was argued by impetus theory and couldn’t explain on the reason why people on earth did not feel anything when the earth is running on its orbit. The answer was available years after his deceased by Galileo theory of Inertia. The later also developed telescope, one important tool that reject many astronomers theory of that time in terms of existence of things in the universe.

It came across to my reading the debates between Mutakallimun and Dahriyyun regarding the nature of time and atoms. The Mutakallimun held that the world must have beginning in time while Dahriyyun maintained contradictively that the world was eternal. The argumentation was interesting and to be frank, i found difficulties to rationalize and need to clarify further with Prof. Osman this coming Wed. Insya Allah, i will update about it separately.

Prof. Naquib al-Attas has defined the Islamic Science as Scientific activity which takes place ultimately within the Islamic worldview and as an extension of it directly within the Islamic Scientific Conceptual Scheme. Prof. Al-Attas puts the element of Islamic worldview as inevitable fundamental for Islamic Science.

The first ayah revealed, Iqra, shows the evidence of how science be acquired and how is the process of its development. That Allah is in the beginning of knowledge, within the process of its development and the one who end it when the time’s come. The case of angels bowing to Adam is another interesting case on the importance of knowledge.

Singapore 1, 2007-2008

Posted by Abdul Halim Syihab on March 21, 2009

I suppose to start my travelling experience post with my past trips in Middle East. However, i found difficulties to recall back those memories without flashing back my saved pics on the subject. That’s why i’d rather to start with something fresh and recent.

My first trip to Singapore was on 2007 (forgot the date). Its a shame though considering i’ve been in Malaysia since 2003 and Singapore is only 4 hour away by road and yet my chance was 4 years after. Its hardly possible to conduct any personal trip while i was unemployed and as a full time student. Financial constraint would be the main factor. My first trip was business trip under Petronas and day trip only. I went there with my boss, En. Azizi, to engage our newly appointed distributor for Singapore area. We flew on the morning and scheduled to be back on last flight.

Apparently, Malaysia Airline (MAS), the flight that i used, is conducting shuttle trip with Singapore Airlines (SIA). That’s mean if you travel from KL to Sing using MAS, you will have flexibility to change the flight between MAS and SIA with the schedule to your favourite. When i departed, my ticket was 10 am flight but we arrived at KLIA earlier so we shifted to SIA to 9 am flights.  The same happened on the flight back, my boss changed the flight into afternoon instead of last flight in the night by just walking to the counter and exchanged the ticket. As for me, i preferred to explore Singapore since this is my first trip there.

My good friend Umay and his family is living in Singapore. Unfortunately,  i couldn’t meet him during that visit because i was afraid i couldn’t catch my flight back and Umay’s resident is far away at the “kampung” hehehe.

Singapore is busy and not friendly city. My first impression was not so good mainly due to my limited time there. I planned to visit there again and stayed for couple of days to get more exposure and i did. I went there on the next visit by bringing in my car. The detail will be deliberated on the next post.

Ustadz Aan Rifanto, visit to KUIS – Fri 20 March 09

Posted by Abdul Halim Syihab on March 20, 2009

Today i have special visit from distinguished person, Ust. Aan Rifanto.

Ust. Aan (from the name it’s obvious where he from) is my senior at Madinah University. In fact, he was graduated when i was admitted back then. He continued his further study for a while, a year if i am not mistaken, at Morocco. He moved to Malaysia then and continued at UKM as master student. Currently, he is on the edge of his Ph.D degree and expected to graduate this year insya Allah.

He and his gangs, Ust. Asep and Ust. Amal, were my inspiration to continue my study in this country. Back to 2002, i intentionally planned a visit during my summer holiday at Madinah to Malaysia to get acquaintance to the educational system here. I spent a week in in Kajang at Ust. Amal’s house and wandered around in the companion of ust. Aan. This visit opened my eyes widely of the higher learning quality other than middle east. I always believe back then that Saudi, Egypt and surrounding countries have the best quality of higher learning in terms of Islamic Studies. I was wrong and have different perspective ever since.

Ust. Aan helped me a lot during my first arrival as student at UIA. My first coming as student was flavoured by the lost of my checked in baggage. Both my bags consist of all my cloth and equipment were lost and never found. The airline (Merpati Airlines) is the source of this disaster. Luckily, all my documents were carried to the cabin. So basically i did not have any extra cloth to wear. Ust. Aan kindheartedly gave away some of his cloths to me for me to wear temporarily. The given cloth still in my wardrobe as memory of his kindness.

We still meet couple of times but not so frequent because he lives far away at Kajang and me at Gombak. We talked a lot today and he promised to pay visit to see my cute Aziz someday.

Thanks Ustadz for the visit.
